Who Was Nilmani Phookan?
Nilmani Phookan Jr was born on September 10, 1933 in Dergaon, Golaghat district, Assam. In 1961, he received his Master’s Degree in History from Guwahati University. Later, in the early 1950s, he began writing poetry. Phookan began his career as a lecturer at Arya Vidyapeeth College in Guwahati, where he remained until his retirement in 1992. He also translated poems from Japan and Europe into Assamese.
In addition, he received the 1981 Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese for his poetry book, Kavita.
