During Sunday night’s Critics Choice Awards, Academy Award-winning actor Ariana DeBose made a joke about her singing skills that clearly offended her.
Actress Bella Ramsey of “The Last of Us” made a joke on stage about DeBose, Ryan Gosling, and Jack Black being “actors that think they are singers,” which made DeBose furrow her brows. Her reaction was captured on video for the broadcast.
The joke was spoken by Ramsey just before it was revealed that Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken,” which appeared in the “Barbie” film, had received the Critics Choice Award for “Best Original Song.”
The joke was written specifically for Ramsey, according to a Critics Choice Association representative, who declined to speak further.
The joke might have been a reference to DeBose’s freestyle rap performance regarding the female nominees at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards in February of last year.
After becoming viral, the rap attracted both praise and criticism from online users. The rap was described as “simultaneously awful and amazing” by an X user. It seems that DeBose deleted her X account following the awards ceremony.
Cinco Paul, a screenwriter who collaborated with DeBose on the musical comedy “Schmigadoon!” called the joke “so wrong it’s embarrassing” on X.
For her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the musical “West Side Story,” DeBose became the first Afro Latina actor to receive a nomination for an Academy Award, which she went on to win.
She was also the first woman of color who was openly gay and won the Oscar for best supporting actress.
