Amidst legal turbulence, Julian Assange reiterates his atheism

Amidst his continual court fights and spotlight appearances, there has been curiosity about Julian Assange’s faith and religious beliefs. The creator of WikiLeaks has denied any religious affiliation and expressed scepticism towards organised faiths, arguing that monotheistic viewpoints could be authoritarian, despite rumours to the contrary.

The Australian native, who was born Julian Paul Hawkins in Townsville, Queensland, on July 3, 1971, has made headlines for his involvement in the WikiLeaks release of sensitive material. His actions resulted in his current detention in the UK while he waits for the resolution of an extradition case to the US about charges of hacking and espionage.

Questions about Julian Assange religious beliefs have been raised, particularly in the wake of an emotional conversation with Hezbollah’s (Lebanese terrorist organisation) leader Hassan Nasrallah. Throughout the conversation, Assange questioned the premise that God is a superpower and advocated for liberation warriors to focus on releasing people from the notion of a monotheistic deity.

In an interview with The New Statesman, Assange made it clear that he is not Jewish and has no Jewish ancestry in response to allegations regarding his Jewish heritage. His maternal grandmother is of Aboriginal Australian descent, adding a touch of diversity to his mostly European family history. Assange only identifies as Australian, even though he had Ecuadorian citizenship for a short while before it was revoked in 2021.

Brought up by his stepfather, Brett Assange, and mother, Christine Ann Hawkins, Julian moved about a lot as a child, attending a variety of schools, including homeschooling. His early interest in computers eventually led to hacking operations, which resulted in his conviction in 1996 and a light sentence. Julian Assange has four children from different partnerships in his personal life. Daniel was born to him and Teresa, his first wife, when he was eighteen. He has another son with former WikiLeaks associate Sarah Harrison following their divorce. In addition, he is the father of two children by Stella Moris-Smith Robertson, a lawyer he married while incarcerated and who also defends him.
